FirstVoices Overview

FirstVoices is our internationally recognized online Indigenous language archiving and teaching resource that allows indigenous communities to document their language for future generations. FirstVoices provides state-of-the-art technologies, training and technical support to community language champions. Teams of fluent Elders and technically savvy youth upload dictionaries, alphabets, songs, stories, words and phrases as well as audio and video to their community archives.

FirstVoices grants fund communities to:
  • Collaborate on B.C. First Nations language archives
  • Develop new archives
Funding: Up to $50,000 for one year and $100,000 for two years
Eligibility: First Nations communities in B.C., including governments, bands, tribal councils and Indigenous organizations including cultural, language and education centres

FirstVoices projects include:

FirstVoices Kids  – a set of interactive online games providing pre-readers with access to the language resources at FirstVoices.com. 

FirstVoices Language Tutor – provides First Nations language students with access to graduated interactive Web-based vocabulary and conversation building exercises. The application keeps track of student progress for both student and teacher.

FirstVoices Dictionary Apps – interactive dictionary/phrase apps in B.C.’s First Nations languages for the iPod, iPad and iPhone. (Twelve are now available with five more on the way). The apps contain text, audio, image and video content and are available as free downloads from the iTunes store.

FirstVoices Keyboards – contains keyboard software for over 100 languages, and includes every First Nations language in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, plus many languages in the USA.
