Call for Expressions of Interest

December 19, 2017
BC Ferries is partnering with FPCC to facilitate the commission of an original design from a First Nations artist and original text from a First Nations writer, to enhance the interior of the Northern Sea Wolf.

Starting in the summer of 2018, the vessel will provide direct summer service between Port Hardy and Bella Coola, with a connector service once a week between Bella Coola, Bella Bella, Shearwater and Ocean Falls. The artist and writer selected will be associated with a departure and/or landing point for the Northern Sea Wolf run the communities that the vessel will service.

We invite Expressions of Interest from artists and writers affiliated with the Nuxalk Nation at Bella Coola, the Gwa'sala-Nakwaxda'xw Band, the Kwakiutl First Nation at Port Hardy and the Heiltsuk Nation at Bella Bella. This invitation includes visual artists working in any art form that can translate to digital images AND writers who can share a profile of their people and the Sea Wolf being.

To assist BC Ferries with their plan to identify and engage with the artists and writers, FPCC will facilitate these commissions, from one writer and one visual artist.

Selection will take place through a two-step process.

Step 1: Qualifying artists and writers are invited to submit Expressions of Interest to FPCC by January 22, 2018 at 5 pm.

Step 2: From these submissions, a committee will shortlist up to four visual artists and four writers, who will be commissioned to develop specific design concepts and detailed text outlines. From these proposals, the final two participants will be selected to work toward final refinement/edits, fabrication and application.

For the one chosen artist and one writer that will be selected:
  • Final artist will be paid $10,000 for their final design.
  • Final writer will be paid $2,500 for final submission.
  • BC Ferries will develop intellectual property use agreements.
  • With the support of FPCC, artists will work with BC Ferries to refine concepts for final commission, adhering to BC Ferries specifications for fabrication and application.
  • BC Ferries will work with the artist to extrapolate elements from the final design for use in other interior design elements in the vessel
  • BC Ferries will exhibit information about the artist and writer and their work, onboard the vessels.
Deadline for submissions is January 22, 2018 at 5 pm.
