FPCC Language Needs Assessment Updates

October 24, 2017

In 2010 and again in 2014, the First Peoples’ Cultural Council (FPCC) released the Report on the Status of B.C. First Nations Languages. FPCC is the only organization in Canada that tracks detailed stats on the status of B.C. First Nations languages, including numbers of speakers, learners and active language programs.

We are now planning the 2018 Report on the Status of B.C. First Nations Languages, which we hope to release in summer 2018, but we need your help to accurately represent the status of your language with updates to, or confirmation of, your community's language data.

The Language Needs Assessment (LNA) is an online form that FPCC uses to collect important language data directly from B.C. First Nations communities. We collect this information because we believe it’s critical to stay up-to-date on the status of languages in B.C.

The data in the Language Needs Assessment gets rolled into the Status of B.C. Language Report, which we use to advocate for increased funding for B.C.’s First Nations languages, and influence policy-making choices in government and the private sector.

Thanks so much!

We are aware of the time and effort it takes to complete an LNA. We are enormously grateful for your support in helping us collect this invaluable language data.

As a small thank you – submit an updated LNA for your community between November 2017 and January 2018 for your chance to win 1 of 6 prizes! Another bonus: the LNA data you provide can also be used for any 2018/2019 language proposal calls you submit to FPCC – you will just need to provide the LNA# on your application form.

What if I submitted an LNA after April 1, 2017?

Don’t worry – if you submitted an LNA after this date, you will still be eligible for the draw if you review your current data. Simply log in to your LNA account and review the data in the ‘Community Needs Assessment’ section of the form. To be entered into the prize draw, send an email to britt@fpcc.ca to note if there are any changes, or to confirm the information is still accurate.

And now for the prizes!

Two Grand Prize draws will win one of two prizes:
  • an Apple Watch (value of up to $500)
  • an iPad (value of up to $500)

Two Second-Place draws will win:

  • a silver bracelet carved by Coast Salish artist Qwul’thilum (Dylan Thomas) (custom-made to order, $200 value)

Two Third-Place draws will win:

  •  a $150 gift card to your choice of Best Buy, Amazon, or Walmart

How do I sign up?

To create your Language Needs Assessment, sign up for an account or log in to an existing account on our LNA Portal: http://fp-maps.ca/user. If you haven’t submitted an LNA since 2015 or before, you’ll need to create a new account.
