Update on Language Program Investment

FPCC Makes Record Investments in B.C.’s First Nations Languages!

We are excited to announce today that FPCC has significantly increased programs, outreach and funding to document and build fluency in B.C.’s First Nations languages for the 2018/19 program year.

The increased support is possible because of the provincial government’s investment of $50 million in First Nations language revitalization in its B.C. Budget 2018.

2018/19 Language Program increases include:
  • Number of language grants are up by 178% to 167 (from 60 last year)
  • Grants are now higher in value and are multi-year
  • Training and workshops are up by 280% to support 475 people in communities (from 125 last year)
  • Two new Language Revitalization Coaches are visiting communities around B.C.
  • New Language Gathering and Sharing grants will bring communities together to share information and resources
  • New resources are available to support community language work
  • In 2019/20, FPCC will continue to increase the number and value of language funding grants available to communities and introduce new programs to support language planning, digitization of language resources and collaboration initiatives.
FPCC CEO Tracey Herbert says: "This year, thanks to unprecedented support from the B.C. government, we’ve been able to create exciting opportunities, mobilize capacity to create new and fluent speakers and reach Indigenous people and communities who have experienced challenges accessing funding in the past. Our goal is to ensure that the original languages of this land flourish again and today I’m very hopeful for their future.”
